Milk containers filled with sanitizers ended up in the cafeterias of two Boston Public Schools earlier this month.

On April 1, clear liquid was found in two half-pint cartons of Garelick milk with a use-by date of April 10, state health officials said.

In a letter to Boston Public Schools, Garelick Farms said a limited number of Dairy Pure 1% low fat half-pint cartons "were inadvertently filled with food-grade sanitizer diluted with water during production." The affected cartons originated at a milk plant in Franklin.

The milk producer, a subsidiary of Dean Foods, insists there is no health or food safety risk.

"All potentially affected product has been retrieved from Boston Public School locations, and evaluation and testing for flavor, odor and appearance was performed. While there is not a health or food safety risk associated with this product, it does not reflect our quality standards," Garelick Farms said.

The school department said all milk dated April 10 and 11 has been dumped as a precaution.

The affected product is not available at retail outlets for consumer purchase, and no other Garelick Farms or Dairy Pure products were affected, the company said.

The Massachusetts Department of Public Health said that the milk producer has responded appropriately under federal and state laws. A Department of Public Health Food Protection Program inspector is scheduled to visit the Garelick Franklin plant on Friday.

"While no BPS student was harmed, it's unacceptable that these contaminated milk cartons ever left the supplier and the Mayor's Office will work with BPS to ensure this won't happen again," Mayor Michelle Wu's office wrote in a statement.
